The Harmony Initiative
In recent years, Huntington community leaders have focused on the need to develop strategies and plans to assist our city and county to welcome and embrace individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Initial discussions began in September 2006 with the exploration of joining the National League of CitiesÂ’ Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities. Dialogue continued among community leaders and in City Council. The result was the development of an exemplary mission statement for our community, which states in part:
We recognize our citizens as our most valuable resource. We acknowledge the people who live and work in our city as our greatest assets. Their ethnic, economic, and religious diversity provides the strength that holds our community together…The City of Huntington, Indiana is a community of civility and inclusion, where diversity is honored and differences are respected.
The Harmony Initiative Task Force organized in 2008 to assist the City of Huntington in implementing this outstanding statement. After initial meetings that spring, the task force began to develop measurable goals and key strategies for each sector of our community. This document contains a working draft of those objectives and action steps.
